Chippenham - A Growing Economy. A Growing Success PDF Print E-mail

Chosen by King Alfred in Saxon times as his royal hunting lodge, Chippenham has grown into a town of over 35,000 people. We’re building on a strong local economy, a business community that encompasses all sectors and that continues to expand and diversify, and our status as a town of strategic significance: Chippenham offers enhanced opportunities to grow and succeed.

Those who live and work here enjoy a high level of services, infrastructure, cultural and leisure activities and excellent shopping opportunities, all within minutes of beautiful countryside: the surrounding area is well known for its significant areas of outstanding natural beauty.

The North Wiltshire Strategy has already identified the need to create 4,500 new houses and 6,300 new jobs by 2026, particularly around Chippenham.

Chippenham and North Wiltshire are home to a cluster of leading companies across the industry spectrum, from hi-tech media ventures, through financial institutions and industrial manufacturers, to food and agriculture and world-class research institutes. Strategic development

Chippenham Chamber of Commerce is leading the development of a major Vision project which will create a vision and plan for the development of Chippenham into the year 2020 and beyond. A significant plan to develop Chippenham town centre over the next 20+ years is currently being finalised.

We take an open and inclusive approach to debating the factors that affect our environment and community, so enabling development of a plan that will ensure all future development contributes to making Chippenham a better, safer, healthier, more vibrant and an attractive place in which to live, work and play.

Aimed at stimulating major redevelopment and investment, the Vision is currently determining Chippenham’s assets, accessibility and unique selling points, as well as opportunities for development. It has already identified that “Chippenham has a very distinctive and intimate character that is currently undervalued and under utilised”, so the opportunities to exploit and benefit from further developing Chippenham’s resources will include key projects to focus on:

  • Major retail development in the town centre and surrounding area
  • Redevelopment of the river side, town centre and market place
  • Transformation of the main industrial site
