Wiltshire's public sector is growing -  between 1995 and 2009, 2,000 new jobs were created and this number is set to increase dramatically with the development of a ‘super garrison’ for the MoD and the relocation of 800 staff as part of Project Inspire at Dstl, POrton Down. These developments demonstrate the confidence in Wiltshire as a location of choice for defence related activities.

Wiltshire is home to a range of public sector bodies, including:

  • The Commission for Social Care - Chippenham
  • Dstl - Salisbury
  • The Health Protection Agency - Porton Down, near Salisbury
  • HMRC - Chippenham
  • The MOD - Salisbury Plain and surrounding localities
  • The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs - Trowbridge, Devizes, Chippenham and Salisbury.

Wiltshire’s key strengths as a location for the sector include:

  • Location – just outside London and the Greater South East area means it can be considered by relocating government agencies and departments
  • Transport - links to London are excellent by road and rail, enabling staff an easy journey for important policy work: it takes just 1 hour 25minutes to get from Salisbury to London Waterloo
  • Workforce – a skilled workforce readily available
  • Premises – our wide range of quality sites and premises are flexible to meet a variety of needs
  • Cost-effective – operating costs, including rents, wages and charges, are significantly cheaper than London
  • Housing – excellent provision across all price ranges
  • Education - high performing local schools and further education facilities
  • Good local transport and communication links
  • Outstanding quality of life, recreational, cultural and leisure facilities – offering everything employees and their families could need to help them make the move.
